Humza Yousaf fires Rangers fan title party warning as he praises club response

Humza Yousaf has warned Rangers fans to avoid Ibrox and George Square on Saturday and celebrate their team's title success at home.

Rangers are set to lift the league trophy on Saturday following their side's game against Aberdeen and a supporter's group have planned a celebration march from Ibrox to George Square.

Many supporters then plan on congregating there for a title party and the Justice Secretary is urging them to avoid doing so and warned a large police presence will be in place.

But he has praised the club for their response to the plans and thanked them for agreeing to put out a statement from the players and management staff.

Steven Gerrard and his players will tell fans they shouldn't gather before, during or after the game against Aberdeen and celebrate the team's success at home.

Lockdown restrictions are still in place in Glasgow with a further easing of them not due until Monday, two days after the game.

And Yousaf took to Twitter to say: "Understand what an important season it has been for Rangers but I am urging fans not to gather during the trophy presentation on Saturday.

"I have had constructive engagement with RFC, Police & Glasgow City Council - we're all urging fans not to gather, the virus has not gone away.

"I am grateful Rangers have agreed to put out a statement from the Manager & Players reinforcing our 'do not gather' message, as well as speaking to fans' groups urging them to obey Covid regulations.

"There will be a police presence around Ibrox & George Square, as well as other locations.

"There is, ultimately, only so much all of those involved can do.

"Fans will have to take personal responsibility and ensure they do not put their own health, or the health of their community at risk."
