Humza Yousaf demands Rangers ban 'shameful' fans as he warns of strict liability

Humza Yousaf has told Scottish football clubs they need to consider strict liability as he urged Rangers to ban any fan involved in the scenes at George Square.

The Justice Minister insists most clubs in Scotland shouldn't be concerned about strict liability being introduced and feels the conversations need to be on the table.

It was suggested it could be brought in before but very few clubs across the country were supportive of the idea.

But now the MSP wants clubs to be open to the idea and reckons it is the only way to get Scottish football clubs into line and stop any further disorder.

He has previously described the scenes at George Square as shameful when sections of the Rangers support clashed with police and were also involved in fighting with other fans.

And he believes the Ibrox club banning any offending fans from the stadium will have more of an effect on improving any issues than a court case would.

He told Sky Sports: “Clearly strict liability has to be considered, there’s no ifs or buts, it’s clearly a matter that has to be discussed and considered.

“What I will say, though, is that having engaged with football clubs right across the Premiership and the lower divisions throughout the years, this is a significant problem, but not for all clubs.

“Most clubs shouldn’t have anything to fear when it comes to strict liability. Those conversations will go ahead but it’s such a shame it requires that stick.

“It shouldn’t require that stick to get football clubs into line here.

“What we need to see from Rangers Football Club in this instance is really hard action against those fans who engaged in shameful scenes at the weekend.

“That means banning them from Ibrox for their entire lives. If that reverberates around other fans then that will be more impactful than a court fine, for example.”
