Humpback whale spotted peering out of the water at tourist boat off coast of Wales

A wandering humpback whale has been spotted by tourists on a boat trip while exploring the gorgeous Pembrokeshire coastline.

Locals watched as the humpback raised its head above water and slapped the waves with its fin.

The whale was captured on Tuesday by Ffion Rees, who was running a boat trip with her company Falcon Boats.

Ffion turned the engine off to watch the whale in the Pembrokeshire waters along with her 12 passengers.

Ffion said: "It is quite common to see Minke whales and there have been very occasional sightings of Fin and Sei whales. I have never seen a humpback in our waters in the 27 years I have skippered here. There was one sighted in Mumbles in 2007."

The sighting of the whale comes three months after an Arctic walrus, nicknamed Wally, left Tenby in Pembrokeshire, where he was believed to have ended up after falling asleep on an iceberg. You can read more about Wally's adventures here.

There have been a number of creatures spotted on Welsh beaches and in the seas around Wales this year, and you can find out more about some of them here.

Ffion said the whale spent about 15 minutes near the surface of the water not moving very far between 20 to 50m away.

She said: "It did a bit of spy hopping - lifting its head out to look around and a couple of pectoral slaps before leaving the area."

The species can grow up to 55ft long and weigh up to 40 tons and feeds on krill and small fish.

The creatures also feature pleats on the lower jaw which expand to allow them to take in more than their body weight in water.
