Humpback whale spotted in Forth tangled in buoy washes up dead on East Lothian beach

It has been confirmed a dead whale that washed up on a beach in East Lothian today is the tangled humpback spotted in the Firth of Forth last month.

The whale was first seen off the coast of Kinghorn, in Fife, trailing a creel pot buoy, sparking a huge rescue mission that was unsuccesful.

Today a 9-metre-long juvenile male humpback whale washed up at John Muir Country Park, near Tyninghame, leading to speculation over whether this was the same whale.

East Lothian Council have now confirmed that it is the same whale spotted in the Forth - the whale was identified by its fluke, which is as distinct as a human fingerprint.

A spokesperson for East Lothian Council said: "Arrangements are being made to remove the whale and people are being advised to keep their distance from he site."
