Humpback whale called Boomerang returns for 15th time off coast of Cork

'Boomerang' made a splash in west Cork over the weekend as the humpback whale returned to feed.

The animal, called Boomerang as it has returned to Ireland 15 times since 2001, is tagged as HBIRL3.

He is recognisable due to his bent-over dorsal fin.

Rare drone footage was captured by skipper Sean Maxwell and TD Christopher O'Sullivan on a tour boat yesterday.

A post from Whales and Wildlife on Twitter says: “Today’s trip was one that will live long in the memory.

“We followed Boomerang for 20 mins.

“He eventually located a huge bait ball.”

The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group have a catalogue of humpback whales which recently reached a milestone of 100.
