Hume Highway reopened near Yass after grass fire

The Hume Highway near Yass reopened late last night, after it was closed in both directions due to a grass fire.

Canberra Times photographer Dion Georgopoulos, who was heading to Melbourne from Canberra, said he was stopped about 6pm.

"We saw smoke in the distance, but didn't think too much of it. As we got closer to the smoke, there was a big traffic jam," he said.

"While we were waiting, many fire trucks were going past, pushing through the traffic jam. And we waited there for about half an hour to 45 minutes."

While the highway was closed, traffic was diverted along Yass Valley Way.

The highway was reopened by 10.30pm.
