'Humbled' Adelaide composer's music features at Jo Cox memorial

Glyn Lehmann says his song is about acceptance and the benefits of diversity.

Adelaide composer Glyn Lehmann says he was honoured to find a song he penned for Harmony Day had been included in a memorial for slain British MP Jo Cox.

Cox was murdered by far-right fanatic Thomas Mair on June 16, 2016, shortly before the UK voted to leave the European Union.

Last week, more than 1,000 children from 23 local schools in her Batley and Spen electorate came together to take part in the Step Into The Future memorial walk.

Lehmann said he received an email last Thursday asking if his song Everyone Belongs could be used at the event, and he instantly said yes.

"It seems like she was a truly amazing person and touched so many people at a relatively young age," he said.

"It really is an honour to have my song associated in any way with someone like that."

Lehmann wrote the song in 2014 for Harmony Day, a day of celebration of Australia's cultural diversity.

"It's about acceptance and benefits of diversity," he said.

"I felt quite humbled to see all of the children singing it; that's why you write songs, that's why you write music."

Among the walk participants was Emily Bird.

She said it was empowering to be a part of something that honoured someone who was selfless and mindful.

"Nobody was political on that day," she said.

"It was purely just about love and respect for Jo."

Cox was heavily involved in charity and community work, co-chaired the Friends of Syria All Party Parliamentary Group, and was a prominent voice for refugee rights.
