Hurricane Humberto was packing sustained winds of 115 mph as the Category 3 storm 330 miles west of Bermuda, the National Hurricane Center said early Wednesday.

The latest: While Humberto is set to bring strong winds to the British island territory, forecasters expect the hurricane's center to pass just to the northwest of Bermuda Wednesday night.

What's next: Tropical storm conditions are anticipated over Bermuda by midday Wednesday, and hurricane conditions are possible between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

  • Humberto is likely to bring 2–4 inches of rain, with isolated maximum amounts of 6 inches.
  • "Swells will continue to affect the northwestern Bahamas and the southeastern coast of the United States from east-central Florida to North Carolina during the next couple of days," per the NHC.

The big picture: Humberto strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane as it moved east into the Atlantic Ocean on Sunday night.

  • The NHC issued a hurricane warning for Bermuda after Humberto strengthened Tuesday evening into a Category 3 storm — classifying it as a major hurricane.
