Humberside lands first ever Newquay flight as Eastern brings holiday route home

A first ever service linking Humberside Airport and Cornwall is to launch next month.

Eastern Airways will start twice weekly flights to Newquay on April 1, as part of a new summer service.

The Kirmington-based regional airline already operates services to the holiday hotspot from Gatwick, a service it describes as doing remarkably well.

Flying on Mondays and Fridays, the schedule is designed to provide “maximum opportunity for long weekend stays, weekly commuting and avoiding the otherwise seven hour drive or eight hour rail journey between the regions.”

Fares start from £74.99, with expectations for around 2,500 passengers throughout the summer.

Eastern’s managing director, Adam Wheatley, said: “Helping solve vital regional connectivity is what Eastern Airways has done for 25 years. From our home base at Humberside, the addition of Cornwall Newquay, our newest base, helps connect one of the most distant surface transport journeys from the Humber Bank, Lincolnshire and East Riding of Yorkshire to one of the most popular tourist destinations in the UK.

“We are delighted to add Humberside to our London Gatwick service from Cornwall Newquay, adding to our existing services to Aberdeen which we have served continuously since 1997, and the return for the third year of Jersey which commences in May.”

All are served on lower emission aircraft, with recruitment ongoing for a number of roles to support expansion across the network.

Deborah Zost, managing director of Humberside Airport, described it as “fantastic news, particularly as the economy begins to gather pace again after two very challenging years”.

She said: “I am sure this service will be a welcome addition for holidaymakers looking to access the beautiful region of Cornwall from their local airport.”

An 11.10am slot for Humberside departures has been secured, with the flight taking just over an hour. It starts the return journey at 1.05pm.

Sam O’Dwyer, managing director at Cornwall Airport Newquay added: “We’re delighted to be adding Humberside to our network with Eastern Airways. With the demand for domestic travel increasing rapidly again now we are confident that this route will prove popular with those looking to find an efficient and cost-effective way to travel between the two regions.”
