Flagship offshore wind event sets sail for 2021 as Chamber webinar charts green recovery

The Humber’s huge offshore wind conference has been cancelled for 2020.

Offshore Wind Connections had been due to take place last month, but was one of the first to move the date out when the coronavirus pandemic struck.

Now September’s revised date has been canned, with organiser Team Humber Marine Alliance looking to 2021, confirming dates in April.

Mary Green, operations manager, said: “Like many of you, we have been closely monitoring the coronavirus situation and the possible impact on the Offshore Wind Connections, sponsors, exhibitors and attendees.

“It is our aim, where possible, to make this event the usual networking and lively conference and exhibition that has become synonymous with all Team Humber Marine Alliance events, and following a meeting of our board of directors, and in consultation with our sponsors, we have decided to postpone OWC 2020 from September this year until April 2021.

“The new dates for the event will be April 21-22, the venue will be the Aura Innovation Centre.

“We apologise for any inconvenience and we would like to emphasise that we have not taken this decision lightly.

“Over the years, Offshore Wind Connections has grown into an event which attracts national and international delegates, and in the interests of all our visitors, we are heeding advice and recommendations from government agencies as well as taking the current travel restrictions and social distancing measures into account.”

Tickets and exhibition space booked will remain valid for the 2021 event, with the initial booking site modified for the new date, and accepting further bookings.

It comes as Hull and Humber Chamber of Commerce prepares for an online webinar next week focusing on how clean energy can power the post-Covid recovery.

The International Trade Centre arm will welcome Richard Gwilliam, head of cluster development at Drax Group, and Professor Dan Parsons, of University of Hull's Energy and Environment Institute, to share insights with Chamber president Phil Jones.

The ambitions of the Humber Estuary to lead the world in decarbonisation and the impact on the region, businesses and job creation will be discussed, with vice president Mike Whitehead, chairing.

It takes place at 2pm on Tuesday, June 9.

Prof Parsons recently shared his views on how the response to Covid-19 "will shape the UK's ability to meet net-zero targets," while Drax is the original anchor project for huge pan-Humber decarbonisation of heavy industry.
