Humber LEP celebration event falls victim to 'worsening Covid-19 situation'

Plans to celebrate the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership’s achievements have been postponed due to the “worsening Covid-19 situation”.

An event was due to take place on Wednesday morning, reflecting on a decade of support for the economic region that saw £350 million secured and invested.

Government insistence on single LEP representation for local authorities saw it dissolved as South Bank councils opted to join Greater Lincolnshire. It has seen the creation of the Hull and East Yorkshire LEP, while pledges have been made by leaders around the Humber to push key priorities for the economic entity.

In a statement, its last chair, Stephen Parnaby OBE, now deputy chair of HEY LEP, told how he had very much been looking forward to the event.

He said: “Sadly, we have taken the difficult decision to postpone this event in light of the worsening Covid-19 situation. We felt it was the most responsible course of action considering the latest Government messaging.

“We apologise for this late change and any inconvenience it may have caused.”

A date in the new year is now being looked at.

Lord Chris Haskins, Mr Parnaby’s long-serving predecessor, was to join for a panel discussion on what the organisation brought between 2011 and 2021. They were to be joined by former board members Stephen Savage and Jo Smedley.

Temporary measures aimed at preventing the spread of the new COVID-19 Omicron variant in the UK will come into force on Tuesday, the government has confirmed. From 4am on November 30 face coverings will be compulsory in shops and other settings such as banks, post offices and hairdressers, as well as on public transport unless individuals are exempt from doing so.
