Humans have to eat less meat to tackle climate change says Ed Miliband

Human beings will have to eat less meat to tackle climate change, Ed Miliband has declared.

The former Labour leader, whose career was torpedoed - in part - by a bacon sandwich, said he'd personally cut down on meat.

He told LBC Radio's Nick Ferrari: "I do eat less meat, actually, partly for health reasons."

Asked if it had anything to do with his awkward sandwich moment, he said: "Yeah I’ve given up the bacon. I can tell you exclusively. So yeah, eat less meat, to recycle, try and use the car less.

Earlier, in an exchange with Radio 4's John Humphrys, he said farmers should be helped to "transition" away from farming animals for meat.

He added: "We are going to have to eat less meat over time."

Extinction Rebellion meeting with Michael Gove was 'less s**t than expected'

And he suggested air travel was another luxury that should be used less frequently.

He said: "That might be one of the issues yeah.

"What experts say is that flying is the hardest thing and we will have to make that transition. But all of these things will have to change.

"I guess the point is John, if we just say to people “you are going to have to make sacrifices and life is going to be worse", I don’t think we are going to bring people with us.

"I actually think life could be better. Less air pollution - if we have better public transport, more walking and cycling in our towns and cities, electric cars."
