Human remains found preserved in jar at empty home in Merseyside

Police have discovered preserved human remains in a jar inside an empty home in Merseyside.

The grim discovery was made at a house in Toxteth, Liverpool, the Liverpool Echo reports.

Merseyside Police said they were called to reports of 'suspicious circumstances' at the address on Monday lunchtime.

In a statement, the force told the Echo: "At around 12.10pm yesterday (Monday 9 August) we received a report of suspicious circumstances an unoccupied address on Wordsworth Street, Toxteth.

"Officers attended and located a jar containing preserved human remains at the property."

A large police presence could be seen in the area last night, and officers remain at the scene today while investigations continue.

Police have placed a cordon around one home on the road, which is located close to Toxteth Park Cemetery.

Officers could be seen within the cordon outside the front of the property and also in the garden.

One person living on the street of semi-detached houses said police were "all over the road".

Merseyside Police said inquiries are being made to establish the "provenance and age of the remains".
