Human remains found in car submerged in Co Fermanagh lake during search for missing Michael Tony Lynch

Human remains have been found inside a car which was submerged in a lake during the search for a missing Irishman.

The vehicle was recovered from Lough Erne in Co Fermanagh earlier during searches conducted as part of the investigation into the disappearance into Michael Tony Lynch.

Mr Lynch was aged 55 when he was reported missing from his home in Clones, Co Monaghan on January 9, 2002.

The father-of-four was originally from Magheraveely, Co Fermanagh.

Earlier this year, detectives from the gardai and PSNI began probing if Mr Lynch's white Mitsubishi Galant car had been submerged in waters in either Co Fermanagh or Co Monaghan.

The PSNI has confirmed that human remains were found inside the car which was discovered near Lisnaskea earlier this week.

There is no foul play suspected in Mr Lynch's disappearance and his family have been informed of the latest discovery.

A PSNI spokesman said: "Police can confirm that human remains have been found following the recovery of a car from Lough Erne in the Corradillar area of Fermanagh on Monday 18th May.

"The vehicle was located underwater by police divers and recovered for examination and is believed to be the Mitsubishi belonging to Michael ‘Tony’ Lynch who went missing from his home in Clones, County Monaghan 18 years ago.

"We are liaising with colleagues from An Garda Síochána, who are investigating Mr Lynch’s disappearance."
