'Human protected bike lane' planned for Edinburgh's Forrest Road

Activists fed up with poor cycling safety are planning to create their own "bike lane" on Edinburgh's Forrest Road, made of people standing in the street.

The human protected bike lane is due to take place on the morning of Friday, April 26 during rush hour.

Similar events have taken place in other cities, including one at University Avenue in Glasgow last month.

Those organising the Edinburgh event are asking people to "risk their own safety to protect others."

They say in a Facebook event: "Forrest Road has a perfect storm of simultaneous green for cyclists going straight ahead and vehicles approaching from right.

"The cycle lane is unusable, and drivers expect to be able to change lanes without checking as their signal was green.

"Even if a driver sees the cyclist, they feel entitled to 'punish' the cyclist for 'jumping the light' - despite the simultaneous green!

People have been trashing and abandoning Edinburgh's Just Eat hire bikes

"Conflict is built in, and compounded by the illegal occupation of the cycle lane by drivers.

"Help form a human protected cycle lane - you will be risking your safety to protect others."
