Human bone that was discovered on Co Louth beach may have been in sea for decades

A probe has been launched after a human bone was discovered on a Co Louth beach.

The grim discovery was made at around 8pm on Monday night at The Haven, Baltray.

The Drogheda Coast Guard were notified of the discovery and arrived at the scene soon after.

It is understood that the thigh bone could have been in the water for decades.

The bone was taken from the scene to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

A forensic anthropologist has carried out an examination of the bone and gardai are awaiting the results before deciding a course of investigation.

If a DNA profile is extracted from the remains, gardai will run the results through the missing persons database of Ireland and Europe
