'Human beings live behind this wall': Land occupied by homeless groups near Temple Meads fenced off

A plot of land once occupied by a homeless family has been fenced off ahead of a major development by the University of Bristol.

During the past few years, several groups have been camping on the site near Bristol Temple Meads, including a family who built a makeshift home.

The land just off Feeder Road has now been boarded up as the university begins construction of a brand new £300 million campus on Temple Island.

Since the fence was erected last week, it has been spray painted with the words: "Human beings live behind this wall".

However, Bristol City Council has said the people camping on the site moved on after being served an eviction notice.

A spokesman for the council said: “Over the past few years there have been a number of different groups camping on the site. All have been offered support from the council’s outreach team and our partner, St Mungo’s.

“Now the University of Bristol are starting construction of its new Temple Quarter Enterprise campus and need access to safely carry out works.

"We served notice and the group moved before the formal eviction date.

"St Mungo’s has gone out again to offer further support and additional needs will be addressed.”

Alex Davies, a resident who lives near the area said: "There was a family of people who had been living on a piece of land near the canal, at the back of Motion.

"Last week, a new wooden fence was erected but it seems that over the weekend, the developers have now shut off the only way to and from the makeshift home.

"The bit of land used to be accessible from Feeder Road but now the fence is blocking it."

The university expects around 3,000 students and 800 staff members will use the new campus.

Accommodation for 953 postgraduate students will be spread across three tower blocks on part of Temple Island.

Academic buildings, meanwhile, are planned for the former site of the Royal Mail sorting office behind Temple Meads Rail Station.
