Hulu cancels planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot

  • Sarah Michelle Gellar has announced that the planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, titled Buffy: New Sunnydale, has been cancelled.
  • Gellar shared the news via an Instagram video on Saturday, saying that Hulu decided not to proceed with the series.
  • She expressed sadness but thanked director Chloé Zhao, saying: “Thanks to Chloé, I was reminded how much I love [Buffy].”
  • Reports of the reboot first emerged in February 2025, with Zhao set to direct a script by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman.
  • The new iteration was intended to feature Ryan Kiera Armstrong as a new slayer, with Gellar appearing in a recurring role.
