Hull prison 'on the brink of riot', MP claims

Hull prison is said to be "on the brink of riot" following the transfer of prisoners from HMP Birmingham, where on Friday inmates took over four wings and forced the intervention of specialist riot teams.

East Hull MP Karl Turner made the claim as the area's Prison Officers Association chairman claimed the institution was "like a powder keg waiting to go off".

Mr Turner told the Hull Daily Mail: "I have it on good authority that Hull Prison is on the brink of a riot. And clearly, this chaos has been caused by the Government, no-one else."

The Ministry of Justice has been contacted for comment.

HMP Hull is a Victorian prison opened in 1870. It was expanded in 2002 with four new wings and other amenities.
