Hull people back renewable energy as council sets 2030 carbon target

Over a third of Hull people questioned on renewable energy said they would like to work in the emerging sector.

In the latest People’s Panel survey sent to residents in the city, 34 per cent said they would be interesting in pursuing careers in clean energy.

Over 80 per cent said they thought renewable energy brought economic growth to the Humber.

Despite the relatively small sample of 1,430 people surveyed, the result shows encouraging support for renewable energy in the city.

It comes as Hull City Council laid out ambitious targets this summer for the city to become carbon neutral by 2030.

The Humber is also at the forefront of the Government’s targets for the UK to be net-zero carbon by 2050.

Cllr Mike Thompson, portfolio holder for environment at Hull City Council, said: “Climate change is undoubtedly one of the biggest challenge facing all local authorities and that is why we have committed to taking action to reduce its impact in Hull.

“We have set ourselves some ambitious targets, including become carbon-neutral by 2030, but we are confident that we can hit them, with the help of our residents.

“As a council, we are confident we will hit our ambitious targets for the city. But we know we do not have all the answers.”

Renewable energy support was strongest for offshore wind and solar power, with 90 per cent of those asked saying they were in favour of the technologies.

Tidal energy (87 per cent support) and on-shore wind energy (80 per cent) were close behind, with just 22 per cent in favour of nuclear energy.

Interestingly, seven per cent of Hull people questioned said they believed climate change posed little or no threat to the city.

In March this year, Hull City Council declared a climate energy, and laid out ambitious plans to tackle carbon emissions.

Over two-thirds of people questioned in the People’s Panel agreed that there is a climate emergency which needs to be tackled, with 14 per cent saying no.

Just 38 per cent however believed Hull could become carbon neutral by 2030.

The Humber region is at the heart of the UK’s offshore wind ambitions.

The UK sector deal for offshore wind, released earlier this year, plans to triple the number of highly-skilled workers in the offshore wind industry to 27,000 by 2030.

It also aims to increase the number of women working in the sector, from 16 per cent to at least 33 per cent.

The Humber’s  offshore wind  sector was highlighted in the deal as a priority for the UK’s ambitions to produce 30GW of clean electricity to be produced by 2030.
