Hull eco-friendly cleaning firm Bio-D sees refill product sales soar

Ethical cleaning company Bio-D has reported a 100 per cent increase in sales of its refill products over the last year.

Bio-D, based in Hull, has spent 2019 focused on increasing the number of products available in refill sizes.

The company recently added 5L refills of bathroom cleaner, lavender scented washing-up liquid and glass and mirror cleaner to its range.

The range of refills are available at selected independent stores across the country, which provide refill stations to further reduce plastic waste.

This means that customers can continue to refill a single bottle multiple times, rather than buying a new one once empty.

Bio-D’s sales increase is a sign that people across the UK are taking notice of the effect that single-use plastics are having on the environment, and attempting to reduce their individual impact on the planet.

Lloyd Atkin, managing director at Bio-D, said: “One of our main values as an eco-friendly business is to help reduce waste in any way possible, so it’s brilliant to see that sales of our refill bottles have increased so significantly.

“Climate change is a topic very much at the forefront of everyone’s mind, and it’s great that people are taking notice and making an effort to help reduce their carbon footprint.

“We would encourage people to continue with the good work, and research other ways in which they can reduce waste and live an environmentally responsible lifestyle.”

Founded in 1989, Bio-D creates cleaning products using plant-based and naturally derived ingredients, and 100 per cent recyclable bottled packaging.

Over 84 per cent of bottled packaging is also created from recycled materials which may have otherwise ended up in landfill.

Earlier this year, Bio-D announced it had hit a target to use recycled plastic in its packaging years ahead of schedule.

Bio-D previously agreed to use at least 75 per cent waste plastic by 2025 when it signed up to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Global Commitment in October last year.

However, with six years to spare, Bio-D has already reached 84 per cent of plastic used from recycled waste.

Mr Atkin said: “Shocking images of waste in our oceans shown by Blue Planet and programmes like it have really highlighted the scale of the plastic problem facing our planet and this has helped drive demand for change from the public.

“As an ethical business which has been working to offer consumers a naturally-derived alternative to regular cleaning products since 1989, it’s always been our ethos to create products that are safe for both the environment and user and that goes so much further than just the ingredients that go into them.”
