Hull City emerge as frontrunners to sign Leeds United forward on permanent deal

Leeds United prospect Mallik Wilks is in talks to sign for Hull City.

The winger has reportedly been earmarked by the Tigers’ new manager Grant McCann as a priority addition this summer, according to our sister title Hull Live .

There are a number of clubs looking at Wilks, who isn’t currently in Marcelo Bielsa’s first-team plans. Last season he impressed on loan at Doncaster, playing under McCann, which could prove key in negotiations.

Last season was something of a breakthrough season for the 20-year-old, having made 53 appearances for the Dons, scoring 16 times to help them achieve a place in the play-offs, losing on a penalty shootout in the semi-final to eventual winners Charlton.

Wilks’ only appearance for Leeds United to date was in the ill-fated FA Cup third-round defeat to Sutton United during the 2016-17 season, with short loan spells at Grimsby Town and Accrington Stanley following.

The academy product grew up in Chapeltown, North Leeds and is still contracted to his boyhood club for another two years, but with the club having brought back Jack Clarke and Jack Harrison alongside new statement signing Helder Costa in wide areas, opportunities at Elland Road aren't likely.

Hull Live report that Leeds are open to a permanent transfer if the right fee can be agreed.

It’s likely that he’d be coming in as a replacement to their current options out wide. Last season’s top scorer Jarrod Bowen has been linked with a move to Arsenal, while Poland international Kamil Grosicki’s future with Hull is also in doubt.

Hull’s squad are due to fly out to Spain for warm weather training in the coming days. McCann, who was announced as Nigel Adkins’ successor earlier in the summer, is keen to tie up any new additions before pre-season training begins.
