Hull City boss reveals talks with Michael Carrick over Manchester United youngster

Hull City manager Grant McCann believes the Championship club have landed a "really good player" after signing Manchester United youngster Di'Shon Bernard on loan.

The United centre-back joined the Tigers, who earned promotion from League One last term, on loan for the duration of the 2021/22 campaign on Friday, significantly bolstering his chances of earning regular first-team football this season this season.

Bernard spent the bulk of last season on loan at League Two side Salford City, racking up a total of 29 league appearances.

The step up to the Championship will represent a new challenge for the 20-year-old, but Hull chief McCann is seemingly confident that he can adapt to playing at a higher level, insisting that his recent involvement with the first-team at Old Trafford proves how talented he is.

"Everyone knows we were in the market for a right-sided centre-half and we’ve waited patiently for Di’Shon," McCann told Hull's club website.

"The fact he’s been in the Manchester United first team the past few weeks and been part of their pre-season plans shows how highly they think of him.

"From speaking to Michael Carrick, and one or two other people at Man United and Salford, I feel it’s a positive progression for the lad.

"He’s confident and got lots of qualities; he’s quick, good at handling the ball, aggressive in the way he plays, wants to play on the front foot and likes to drive forward.

"We feel we’ve got a really good player on our hands and we’re looking forward to working with him."

Friday proved to be a busy day for the young defender, as ahead of sealing his temporary switch to the KCOM Stadium, United confirmed that he had put pen to paper on a new long-term deal at Old Trafford.

Bernard has been with United since the age of 16 and has one senior competitive appearance to his name, that coming in the UEFA Europa League back in 2019.

More recently, the defender featured in United's pre-season friendly tussles against both Derby County and Queens Park Rangers.
