Hull City and Ipswich Town still in race for Bristol City forward as Huddersfield Town consider options

Sammie Szmodics' loan future is unlikely to be decided this week with the Bristol City forward not an immediate priority of Huddersfield Town.

According to the Huddersfield Examiner, Szmodics is on the Terriers' list for potential January additions, with manager Danny Cowley keen for a No10 and wideman, but City's Championship rivals are also exploring other options.

Bristol Live understands that Huddersfield are head coach Lee Johnson's preferred loan destination for the 24-year-old as they are not considered a play-off rival and can help build Szmodics' Championship experience.

Since arriving from Colchester United in the summer, Szmodics has played just 107 league minutes across three appearances and has found himself in and out of the matchday squad.

He could, however, be involved for this Saturday's FA Cup third round tie against Shrewsbury.

Szmodics is still considered part of Johnson's long-term plans and has consistently caught the eye in training and for the Under-23s but has been unable to force his way into the starting XI.

That's in-part due to Kasey Palmer's early season form in the playmaker role and the reliability of Andi Weimann as second striker - the two positions that suit Szmodics the best.

Huddersfield's delay could bring Hull City back into the equation as the Tigers are known suitors and tried to sign Szmodics in the summer.

However, it is believed that due to the Tigers' position in the Championship table, Johnson is reluctant to boost a rival given how close the league is with just five points separating Millwall in sixth and QPR in 15th.

League One promotion chasers Ipswich Town have also enquired about Szmodics' availability, and would appeal to the player given their proximity to his hometown of Colchester, but the Robins ideally want a Championship loan.
