Hugo Santillan dead: Argentine becomes second boxer to die in a week from injuries sustained in the ring

Hugo Alfredo Santillan has become the second boxer to die in a matter of days from injuries sustained in the ring, it has been confirmed.

Argentine Santillan's death comes just 48 hours after that of Russian fighter Maxim Dadashev, who died following injuries suffered in his IBF light-welterweight fight against Subriel Matias in Washington on Friday.

The World Boxing Council (WBC) announced the news on Thursday, saying it joined with Santillan's family and friends "in grief [and] support".

Santillan, who was 23, collapsed in the ring shortly after his WBC Latino Silver lightweight bout with Eduardo Javier Abreu in San Nicolas, Argentina on Saturday and was taken to hospital where he underwent emergency surgery for a blood clot on his brain.

Dadashev had also been sent to hospital with bleeding on the brain after his bout against Matas was stopped at the end of the 11th round.
