Hugo Rodallega recalls seeing Wayne Rooney 'drinking like a madman' on nights out

Ex-Wigan Athletic and Fulham striker Hugo Rodallega has revealed that he would often see England stars Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard letting loose on a night out during his spell in the Premier League.

Rodallega spent four seasons with the Latics between 2008-2012 before moving on for a three year spell at Fulham.

During his time in the north-west he enjoyed the nightlife on offer, and in a recent Instagram Live he lifted the lid on what he witnessed both Rooney and Gerrard get up to.

"If people knew how many times I bumped into Rooney in Manchester drinking like a madman or the number of times I saw Gerrard on a bar dancing shirtless..." Rodallega said.

"They are human beings, there is nothing wrong with it. I can count with one hand the number of footballers who didn't drink. All of them, all of us, go out and drink.

"I have always said it. I enjoy drinking and dancing. I love salsa dancing. There is nothing wrong with it. I know we are footballers, but we are human beings too."

Rooney, who now plays for Derby County, has always had a reputation for being something of a party animal, and his former teammate Gary Neville recently admitted he could be difficult to handle.

Speaking to Sky Sports , he said: "I remember once that a security guard was looking after him and I literally put a guard on him. I always thought he was a target from people who we saw in the street, I always thought he was someone that other fans would try and wind up.

"Anyway basically he stopped at the top of the stairs, this security guard, and handed him over to another security guard at the bottom of the stairs and he [Rooney] ended up having a battle in the middle of the stairs in between the two security guards!

"It was about a 10-step staircase and he’s literally been left alone for five steps! But he was somebody who was a challenge, but he was a great lad."
