Hugo Lloris talks about his howler against Southampton: 'I was really upset with myself'

Hugo Lloris admitted he was left 'really upset' by his mistake as Tottenham beat Southampton 2-1 on Saturday afternoon but explained how he managed to recover.

Spurs had been leading the Saints at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium through a Tanguy Ndombele goal when it all suddenly went wrong.

Serge Aurier was sent off after receiving two yellow cards within five minutes and then Lloris had a moment to forget. The Frenchman attempted a Cruyff turn three yards from his goal line and failed to take the ball with him, allowing Danny Ings the simplest of tap ins.

Harry Kane put Spurs back ahead soon after and Lloris bounced back in the second half with two world class saves and a flawless performance as the visitors failed to break down the ten men of Tottenham.

"It was important to show a response after the last few games. I think today we showed personality and character, especially after the red card and my mistake. We showed the togetherness that we used to show. That’s the most important thing today, that we got the three points. Now we are looking for continuity," he said.

On his mistake he added: "You know as a keeper you can face that type of moment. The most important thing is how you react, to keep on pushing up. I was really upset with myself, but that’s normal.

"The most important thing is in the second half is I stayed in my game, I stayed calm and today this mistake didn’t cost the team any points and that’s important to me."

For Lloris it is now about Spurs going on a run of good results, regardless of the performances.

"When you see the other teams, sometimes it doesn’t matter about playing fantastic football, only the result matters," he said.

"When we talk about consistency it’s more about results, the performances will follow for sure. When you’re fully confident, you find the level you’re looking for. It’s now just to find continuity in the weeks ahead."
