Hughes woman facing importation charges after police intercept parcel

A woman has been arrested for the alleged importation of more than a kilogram of the chemical gamma-butyrolactone, which is a precursor to the drug GHB.

The woman was charged after a parcel scheduled to be delivered to her Hughes home was intercepted by police, ACT Policing said.

Police replaced the chemical with a substance similar in appearance and delivered it to the woman's residence on Thursday.

The woman was arrested shortly afterwards and taken to the ACT Watch House.

She will appear in the ACT Magistrates Court on Friday charged with importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug, attempted possession of a commercial quantity of an unlawfully imported drug and failure to comply with an order relevant to a serious offence.

Anyone with information about the importation, distribution, manufacture or supply of drugs in the ACT is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website. Information can be provided anonymously.

More to come.
