Hugh Jackman warns fans to wear sunscreen after having fifth skin cancer growth removed since 2013

Hugh Jackman has had treatment for his fifth known case of skin cancer since 2013.

The Wolverine actor posted a photo of himself with dressing across his nose to his six million followers on Twitter.

In a caption alongside the image, he said it was “an example of what happens when you don’t use sunscreen”.

Basal cell carcinoma, the mild skin cancer variant from which Jackman suffers, is the most common type of non-melanoma skin cancer. Non-melanoma skin cancers are mainly caused by overexposure to UV light and are one of the most common cancers in the world.

The 47-year-old posted a similar image to Instagram in 2013 when he told followers his wife Deborra-Lee Furness encouraged him to visit a doctor to check out a mark on his nose.

The latest basal cell carcinoma’s removal will be the actor’s fifth since 2013.

In 2014 he told reporters he was likely to get more: “I’m realistic about the future and it’s more likely that I’ll have at least one more but probably many more [carcinomas], which is not uncommon for an Aussie particularly from English stock growing up in Australia where I don’t remember ever being told to put sunscreen on.”

Last year Jackman launched a range of sunscreen for children, saying at the time: “Sun protection wasn’t as prominent for my generation and it’s important we emphasise its value for the next.”
