Hugh Jackman: I’m not scared of reaching 50

Hugh Jackman said he had no fears about turning 50 — and that the only concerns he has in life are for his family.

The Wolverine star, who hit the age milestone last month, also told how he does not feel the burden of fame, which he compared to encountering the occasional traffic jam while driving a Ferrari.

He told Gentleman’s Journal: “Turning 50... I’m not frightened of that — I’ve got no mid-life crisis planned. I certainly have worries and fears concerning my family, my children particularly. But there’s not a parent on the planet who doesn’t feel that.”

The actor has been married to Deborra-Lee Furness, 62, since 1996. They have a son Oscar, 18, and daughter Ava, 13.

Jackman has previously told how he was afraid of the dark and of heights as a youngster. In the interview he revealed how he overcame his fears, saying: “I used to jump off the diving board in my high school, over and over and over again, until I wasn’t scared any more.”

He said of celebrity: “I very rarely feel the burden of my fame. Let’s put it this way, if I was to hand you the keys to a Ferrari, and tell you that there were going to be some traffic jams occasionally, you’d still take those keys — every day of the week! I’m doing what I love, so if there is the odd ‘traffic jam’, I just try to put that into perspective.”

The actor appeared in 2006 psychological thriller The Prestige with David Bowie, who he admits left him starstruck.

He explained: “There was this awkward moment when I first met Bowie. You know when you get a little starstruck and you say things you shouldn’t? I told him about the time I had a ticket to see him in concert when I was 12. He just walked off.”
