Huge wildfires near Dalaman Airport in Turkey as Scots family caught 'scarily close'

A Scots family came "scarily close" to a raging wildfire that engulfed forests close to popular Turkish holiday resorts.

Lorna Smith her husband Wallace and their three kids watched in horror as hundreds of firefighters battled to control the ferocious blaze on the last night of their holiday in Gocek, just a few miles from Dalaman Airport.

Local media reports that hundreds of hectares of forest in Gocek and Dalaman have been destroyed in the province of Mugla.

Mum Lorna took video and pictures of the dramatic scenes as they unfolded close to their holiday accommodation, with families on the opposite side of the road among those evacuted.

Last night she said: "Wildfires in the hills just behind us. Came scarily close. Five helicopters with water baskets been working continuously to tackle the fires for the past four hours."

The Glasgow family - including kids Rhona, Fraser and Lyndsey - say they are safe and but fear their scheduled return flight to Scotland later tonight may be affected.

The 44-year-old added: "We're safe and things looking like they are under control. Five to six helicopters have been discharging water since 7am, light rain has literally just started, which is a blessing. Hopefully there's enough rain to help put it out completely as there's lots still smouldering in the hills."

More than 500 firefighters helped tackle the blaze, which spread as far as the city of Fethiye as a result of strong winds.

Wildfires are not uncommon in Turkey's summer months, usually fuelled by dry weather..
