Huge wildfire breaks out in Highlands with crews battling blaze for hours

Fire crews are on the scene of a massive Highland wildfire they have been battling to control since lunchtime.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the blaze near Tarvie, Strathpeffer at 1.36pm on Friday April 17.

More than 20 firefighters and six appliances are currently in attendance, are estimated to remain there for some time.

Pictures show thick white smoke billowing out over the scenery with embers and flames visible on the side of a hill amid the recent warm weather.

One local posted on Facebook : "Been listening to fire engines all afternoon racing towards this fire in the Strathconon Hills."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service statement read: "We are currently in attendance at a large wildfire near Tarvie, Strathpeffer in Highland.

"More than 20 firefighters and six fire appliances are in attendance after the alarm was raised earlier today at 1.36pm. Crews will remain on scene for some time.

"As crews tackle the fire in Tarvie, we're reminding communities that an 'extreme' risk of wildfire warning is in place for much of Scotland through this weekend and into next week."
