Huge wildfire breaks out in Elgin as plumes of black smoke billow into the sky

A huge wildlife has broken out in Elgin sparking a major emergency response.

Fire crews are currently in attendance at the blaze near Birnie Road in the town after the alarm was raised at 2pm on Sunday afternoon.

Six appliances were sent to the scene as well as the wildfire unit and water carrier.

Huge black plumes of smoke can be seen billowing into the sky from miles away.

The extent of the blaze is not yet known but a fire service spokesperson said around 530 square feet of gorse was alight.

The incident comes amid a sweltering heatwave as temperatures reach above the mid-20s for the second week in a row.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "We are currently in attendance at the scene of a wildfire near Birnie Road in Elgin.

"The call came in at 14.08pm. Around 530 square feet of gorse is alight. We have sent six appliances to the scene, the wildfire unit and the water carrier.

"We are still in attendance at the scene."
