Huge waves crash on to prom as Storm Ciara batters the region

Giant waves came crashing into sea walls as Storm Ciara battered the region this morning.

In New Brighton, groups of onlookers witnessed dramatic scenes as waves smashed against the prom, leading to the coast road being closed to traffic.

Meanwhile in Crosby, the car park overlooking the Iron Man statues was flooded as waves leapt over coastal defences.

The Met Office warned of very strong gusts and the risk of flooding as Storm Ciara hit the region.

The whole of the southern half of the country, stretching as far as Cumbria, remained covered by an amber warning for high winds, and a yellow warning for rain.

Part of Duke Street in the city centre was covered in building debris, while train services were disrupted by falling trees, and all Mersey Ferry services were cancelled.

The Women's Merseyside derby, due to take place at Goodison Park, was also called off.

However by this afternoon the worst of the storm appeared to have passed, with the odd sunny spell.
