Huge tree branch comes down in Swansea's shopping area just missing man 'by inches'

A huge tree branch has fallen down in Swansea's main shopping area, missing a shopper by 'inches'.

The branch came down in Whitewalls near Costa Coffee on Friday afternoon.

Graham Darby was in the city centre at the time. He was walking when he heard a loud sound at around 1:30pm.

"It sounded like lightning at first as the branch was breaking. When I looked up, I saw that the branch was falling so ran to the side and it missed me.

"I then had to walk around to make sure no-one was hurt and everyone appeared to be OK. I then took the film around two minutes after it happened."

Graham said the branch missed him and others by "inches".

"Thankfully no-one was hurt. If town had been busier it could have been a different story. Thank god for the lockdown," he added.

The yellow weather warning for rain on Saturday and Sunday is now amber with reports that a month's worth of rain could fall over the weekend, although Swansea is just outside the amber warning area

The "unusual" wind directions mean places that are normally more sheltered will be hit.

The storm has already wrecked buildings after hitting France with 95mph winds.

Named Alex by French forecasters, it is expected to lead to substantial disruption across Wales as an area of low pressure moves away from France.

A Swansea Council spokesperson said: “A tree branch fell in Whitewalls today at around 1.30pm.

“Our staff were swiftly on site and cordoned off the immediate area to ensure that people were safe. Our tree officers cleared the fallen branch and made the tree safe. The area was fully reopened at around 4pm.

“We thank shoppers and businesses for their understanding.”
