Huge tree blocks road after being felled by torrential rain overnight in Bolton

A huge tree blocked a road in Bolton this morning (October 1) after being felled by torrential rain overnight.

Parents on the school run were prevented from dropping their children off at work

Luckily, some passing tree surgeons happened to be in the area and were able to come to the rescue.

The large tree was brought down across Smithills Croft Road, in Bolton - where traffic was unable to pass in both directions.

It was cleared by passing tree surgeons from Stump N Grind.

Local photographer Phil Taylor said: "Thanks to the tree surgeons from Stump and Grind who were passing, they got the road cleared."

Greater Manchester was battered by heavy rain yesterday - and there could be more to come.

A huge downpour lasting around an hour hit the region yesterday afternoon, leading to flash flooding in some areas.

Conditions were particularly treacherous on the region's motorways.

By 7pm two lanes of the M60 near Stockport remained closed because of the after-effects of the downpour.

An exit slip road of the M60 at junction 17, near Prestwich, also had to close.

At the height of the deluge the southbound M6 was closed near junction 17 at Congleton due to a collision which sent debris across the carriageway.
