Huge tower could replace Stockport pub with every flat boasting a 'winter garden'

Plans have been unveiled for a new apartment block on the site of a former pub in Stockport. Under the proposals, The George on the corner of the A6 Wellington Road North and Heaton Lane in the town centre would be demolished to make for a 15-storey tower.

The block would contain co-working spaces on the lower floors and a total of 72 apartments, each with a 'winter garden.' A winter garden is another term for an area that extends a living space out into the fresh air and are popular among new-build apartment buildings, sometimes referred to as sky gardens or roof gardens.

The site of the former boozer, which closed in 2017, faces the Merseyway shopping centre and sits next to the Beckwith House office building and the Stockport Travelodge.

A planning application for the scheme, being put forward by Altrincham-based developer Provincial Land and designed by Ollier Smurthwaite Architects, is expected to be submitted in the coming weeks.

If it is approved, it would become the latest large residential development in Stockport town centre, which is in the midst of a huge £1billion facelift.

Work is already underway on an apartment block that is accompanying the town's new £120 million transport interchange, being built on the site of the old bus station, which will have 196 'high quality' apartments and a rooftop park.

Next door the £60 million restoration of the Grade II listed Weir Mill and two accompanying new build blocks which will eventually see the creation of 253 new apartments is also continuing apace with both projects expected to complete next year.

Plans have also been unveiled for a new £250 million 'walkable neighbourhood' next to Stockport Viaduct containing 1,200 new homes, shops, offices and leisure space.
