Huge tailbacks on M8 near Glasgow Airport after overhead bridge damaged

Damage to an overhead bridge sparked traffic chaos near Glasgow Airport with police forced to close the M8 in both directions.

Huge tailbacks formed at rush hour after the incident at Junction 29a near Bishopton, Renfrewshire.

Police attended the scene with some drivers taking to Twitter to say they were stuck on the Erskine Bridge.

Engineers were sent to inspect the overpass. Traffic Scotland reported that a crash had damaged the overbridge and an inspection was required before police would allow traffic through.

West bound traffic was allowed to start moving just before 5.25pm but motorists heading towards Glasgow were stuck in hams until just before 7pm when the road was finally opened in both directions.
