In a tweet posted yesterday afternoon, Manchester Council said: "When we said Manchester was back and buzzing this isn't quite what we had in mind.

"You might have spotted that a swarm of bees have taken up residence on Peter Street.

"Our pest control team are on the case and they will be safely moved along very soon. Bee careful out there."

In a tweet posted this morning, the town hall confirmed that the bees had been safely moved to an apiary.

"This turned out to be one of the biggest swarms our team have ever collected!", the tweet read.

"Thank you to everyone asking about their welfare, after the bees had enjoyed their day out in town they were safely moved to one of our apiaries for a quieter life."

Footage showed the swarm of bees covering the entire back window of the car on St James Square, near Deansgate.

Crowds gathered to watch the spectacle shortly before midday.

Michael Hewitt, 55, had been returning from his lunch break when he noticed a 'commotion' outside his office building and the bees covering the car.

"There were a lot of people outside and the bees were quite airborne then," he said, speaking to the Manchester Evening News .

"I think the queen had landed on the car and then all the other bees followed.

"There was easily thousands of them. There have been lots of people watching.

"There is a bee keeper at the moment trying to get them all into a box which is hilarious.

"There are still at least a thousand on the car outside at the moment."
