Huge Stingray washes up on Welsh beach

A huge Stingray typically found in Mediterranean waters has washed up on a beach in Port Talbot alongside other marine creatures.

The marine fish, typically known for its venomous stinger was found by a member of the public on Monday, October 19, while out walking on Aberavon beach.

David Elward, 33, from Cwmafan, was taking a lunchtime walk with family when he came across two Stringrays.

The creatures were washed on the main part of the beach near to the promenade and were just hundreds of yards apart.

David, who often walks on the beach, says he has "never come across anything like the animals" in Aberavon before.

"I was out for a walk with family when we came across it. We were walking from the steel works end to the Estuary way - the beach was quite busy with dog walkers etc," he said.

"The tide was right out and the Stingray was covered in sand so it was clear it had been washed in."

"There was also a second ray too but it was more of a carcass, it looks like perhaps a dog or something had been at it."

David says the Stingray was around a foot in length and was near the eroded steps on the beach.

The common Stingray - most found in Uk waters - can grow Up to 5ft across and 80lbs.

"I just assumed they had come in with the ride when the tide was high because they were completely beached," he said.

"It's the first time I've ever come across anything like that."
