Huge SPL decision could boost Leeds United promotion hopes as Celtic win title

The SPFL has opted to curtail the 2019/20 season amid the coronavirus pandemic, with Celtic declared champions and Hearts relegated from the top-flight.

In a board meeting on Monday, it was decided that the campaign would finish with points-per-game deciding the final standings, something Leeds United would welcome should the Championship end in the same way.

On Friday, the EFL League Two season was also declared finish but final decisions are being made on relegation to the National League, while Barrow are likely to be promoted from non-league to get the division back to 24 teams following Bury’s collapse.

Decisions on EFL’s League One are still outstanding, with the clubs unable to agree to a decision in Friday’s meeting, with relegation from the division set to be a sticking point amid the ongoing discussions.

Relegating teams without the full campaign being played would likely lead to legal challenges, although there is little opposition to the top clubs being rewarded for their performances so far this season.

That has been the case in Scotland, with Celtic declared champions and set to lift their ninth title in a row.

The EFL is set to meet again this week to continue their discussions around League One and the Championship, with the latter keen on playing the remainder of the season behind closed doors.
