Huge secret cave Gaping Gill with 100m drop to open to the public for just one week

One of Britain’s biggest caves is opening to the public for just one week - and you can drive there from Liverpool .

Brave cavers will be winched 110m down from a hole in the roof, to the main chamber below, which is 129m long.

Visitors can then use a torch to explore the cave, which is only opened to the public twice a year.

The drop from the moor to the bottom of the main cave is the same height as St Paul’s Cathedral in London.

Gaping Gill cave is in the in the Yorkshire Dales town of Ingleborough, and features one of the longest and most complex cave systems in the UK.

It also features Britain’s highest unbroken waterfall. The Fell Beck stream, which created the cavern, flows into the roof of the cave before plunging to the limestone floor below. To allow visitors to enter, the stream is temporarily diverted by a makeshift dam.

Press Association photographer Danny Lawson, who got a sneak peek when he was lowered all the way down, described the cave as "massively impressive".

He said: "It's a completely surreal experience as you descend into the abyss. It's pitch black at first before your eyes gradually adjust. And it's like an echo chamber so you can hear the water running nearby."

The cave is open between May 25 and 31, and there is a fee of £15 to enter.
