Huge search operation launched following reports of 'person in water' - but nobody found

A huge search operation was launched in Stockport overnight following reports a person had fallen into a river.

Firefighters, police and paramedics were called to the River Goyt in Romiley just before midnight.

Rescuers spent almost three hours searching the river.

But thankfully no-one was found and the search was called off at about 2.30am.

Video from the scene shows a fire engine and several police vans and ambulances parked on the bridge over the river on Otterspool Road.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "At approximately 11.50pm on Monday 18, October, three fire engines from Offerton, Marple and Eccles fire stations attended an incident on Otterspool Road, Romiley, Stockport, involving reports of a person potentially in the water.

"Crews arrived quickly and assisted other emergency services, the search was called off as there was no person in the water.

"Fire crews were on the scene for approximately two hours 40 minutes."
