Huge search launched to find male seen in Northumberland river

A large multi-agency search has been launched to help locate a male who was last seen in a river in Northumberland.

Emergency services were called shortly before 4.15pm on Sunday following concerns for the welfare of a male who was seen in the river near to Ovingham in Northumberland. Northumbria Police, the North East Ambulance Service, and Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service all attended the scene while a helicopter was seen hovering above.

Officers said emergency services remain at the scene to locate the male and bring him to safety. They also urged the public to not gather in the area to "allow for those at the scene to carry out their duties".

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Shortly before 4.15pm today (Sunday) police received a report of concern for the welfare of a male who was seen in the river near to Ovingham in Northumberland.

"Emergency services were deployed to the area and remain at the scene to locate the male and bring him to safety. There is a large multi-agency presence in the area and we would ask the public to not to gather where possible to allow for those at scene to carry out their duties.

"Anyone with information which could assist is asked to get in touch with police via 101 quoting reference NP-20220717-0819."

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called at 4.12pm this afternoon to reports of concerns for someone in the water off Piper Road in Ovingham. We currently have seven resources on scene but are currently unable to provide any further information."
