A major scam has been uncovered in India after official records showed a 65-year-old woman had given birth to eight children in just 14 months.
Investigators in the state of Bihar are probing allegations that corrupt officials recorded fake births in order to steal cash.
The money was available in a scheme designed to prevent baby girls being murdered.
It was spotted when Upendra Chaudhary, who runs the local Musahari Primary Health Centre, spotted something was amiss.
Fraudulent paperwork claimed that Leela Devi had given birth to eight daughters in just 14 months, despite being 65.
She told the Hindustan Times : “My last baby is a boy and was born 21 years ago. I came to know I had been included as a beneficiary and money had been given to me nearly a week ago.
"When I approached the operator of a CSP (customer service point) centre, where my account is, I was asked by the operator not to lodge a case and that they will return the money withdrawn in my name."
A suspect has reportedly gone into hiding.
Another woman in her 60s, Shanti Devi, had five daughters in eight months, the records claimed.
For each birth, a payment of 1,400 rupees was made, with the cash quickly being withdrawn from the accounts they were paid into.
But when the women were approached, officials said, they express "bewilderment" - and pointed out it had been decades since they were last pregnant.
Mr Chaudhary branded his findings "unbelievable", the Times of India reports.
Most of them had middle aged children, according to local media.
District collector Rajesh Kumar, who headed an inquiry into the anomalies, said: "Departmental action will be taken against those found guilty after a detailed probe which would be in addition to legal punishment that may be awarded by a court of law in due course."
