NEMURO, Hokkaido -- Hanasaki Port in Nemuro, Hokkaido, has seen large hauls of sanma saury being landed this year -- a turnaround from last year's record-low catch. A huge school of saury was found off the Kuril Islands, which led to fishing boats having to form a line to land their catches on Tuesday, as the port recorded the nation's largest saury landings for the eighth consecutive year. From early Tuesday morning, a steady stream of boats arrived to unload their catches.
The price of saury at the first auction at 7 a.m. reached a peak of 227 yen (2 dollars) per kilogram, one-third of the price on Friday, the first day of the season's hauls from large ships. On Tuesday, 1,342 tons of saury was landed at the port.
The president of a Nemuro fish merchant, which was selling the fish for 100 yen each, said, "We can offer fatty saury for a reasonable price this year."
