Huge rescue mission as cyclist rushed to hospital after falling from bridge and plummeting into river

A cyclist was rushed to hospital after falling from a bridge and plummeting into a river on Sunday afternoon (June 11).

Fire crews attended the scene off Ashworth Road in Heywood at around midday to reports that a man, who had been riding a bike, had fallen from a bridge and landed in the water below.

Paramedics from the North West Ambulance Service requested assistance from the fire service as the man had become 'inaccessible'.

Crews performed a 'complex rope rescue' to lift the man out of the river. He was left injured in the fall and was taken to hospital from the scene.

A huge emergency services presence was pictured at the scene near Cheesden Brook on Sunday afternoon, with the road cordoned off and two ambulances present.

A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "Earlier today paramedics asked for firefighters to help them at an incident where a man riding a bicycle has fallen from a bridge and landed in a river, inaccessible to the paramedics.

"Firefighters from across Greater Manchester rushed to the scene off Ashworth Road in Heywood, where they performed a complex rope rescue of the injured man so he could be taken to hospital for further treatment."

The nature of the injuries the cyclist sustained have not been confirmed. The North West Ambulance Service have been contacted for further details.
