Huge RBS bank card change for millions of customers – what you need to know

Millions of Royal Bank of Scotland account holders are set to have their Visa debit cards replaced by Mastercards as Natwest follows in the footsteps of Santander and First Direct.

Many RBS customers received an email from the bank this morning to alert them to the fact that their Visa debit card will soon be replaced with a new Mastercard - but have reassured customers that 'nothing is changing with your account, and your card will work in just the same way.'

They wrote: "We'll be launching the new cards this year and will let you know closer to the time when you can expect to receive yours through your letterbox.

"Your old Visa card will stop working soon so take a look at how to get your new Debit Mastercard card up and running. We won't contact you to request any personal details, so any requests you get could be a scam.

But why are RBS moving to Mastercard? The bank wrote that: "Now and then we rethink our relationships to keeps things fresh for you and us. We’ve decided to move to Mastercard as it allows us to offer a better overall service to our customers, including perks like Priceless® experiences."

When your new Mastercard has arrived, RBS has instructed you to:

  • Chop up your old Visa card
  • Pay once with your new card (using the PIN) or withdraw cash, you'll then be able to use contactless payments
  • Make sure to check that your details are up to date on any website's that you use regularly - don't forget subscriptions and recurring payments
