Huge RAF aircraft spotted circling Edinburgh Airport before heading back to England

A huge RAF plane was spotted circling Edinburgh earlier today before heading back south to travel to RAF Brize Norton.

The Airbus A400M, one of the biggest planes the RAF has, is used as a transport and tanker aircraft.

The aircraft can carry as many as 116 troops, as well as other military vehicles like tanks and helicopters.

Flying under the callsign 'Comet 451', the aircraft was seen circling round Edinburgh Airport on the Flight Radar app.

It is believed the aircraft took off from RAF Brize Norton, and flight planner apps show it has now begun its journey back south.

The RAF have been contacted for comment.

It's not the first time this year one of the huge aircraft have been spotted in the sky above Edinburgh, with the RAF explaining in July locals might see the aircraft in the area as it "engaged in essential training".

Locals also spotted the aircraft earlier in the year in June.

Some mistakenly thought the aircraft might be parts of the RAF assisting the UK in the fight against coronavirus, but in July the RAF said it was unconnected.
