Huge queues outside Costco as shoppers buy 'toilet paper and tinned food'

Lengthy queues have been seen outside a wholesale warehouse in Bristol today (September 28).

Photos taken by a member of the public show a large number of people queueing to enter Costco in St Brendan's Way, Avonmouth.

He said shoppers appeared to be buying "large amounts of toilet paper and tinned food," and estimated there were "roughly 75 people" waiting to enter the store when he visited early this afternoon.

The snaking queue is reminiscent of scenes that were commonplace across the UK in March, when many stockpiled essential items ahead of the coronavirus lockdown being announced.

Costco is a members-only warehouse which sells a variety of items including bulk groceries, electronics and more.

Its CEO Craig Jelinek has urged visitors to wear face masks at all times and observe social distancing.

He said: "Costco employees are required to wear face coverings, and now we are asking that Costco members do so too.

"We know some members may find this inconvenient or objectionable, but under the circumstances we believe the added safety is worth any inconvenience.

"This is not simply a matter of personal choice; a face covering protects not just the wearer, but others too.

"However, the use of a face covering should not be seen as a substitute for social distancing.

"Please continue to observe rules regarding appropriate distancing while at Costco."

Last week Morrisons became the first supermarket to ration some of its key items, over fears panic buyers could once again empty its shelves.

Tesco followed suit and decided to place a three-item limit on popular products including flour, dried pasta, toilet roll, baby wipes and anti-bacterial wipes.

There were 41 new coronavirus cases recorded in the Bristol area between Saturday and Sunday, according to the latest government data.

A total of 4,468 people are now known to have had COVID-19 in and around Bristol since the beginning of the first outbreak in March.
